  Making Your First Contact (QSO)

Step 1: Listen First

Before transmitting, always listen to the frequency. Ensure no one else is currently using it. If it sounds clear, ask, "Is this frequency in use? This is [Your Callsign]." If you hear no reply, the frequency is yours.


Step 2: Calling CQ

"CQ" is the universal code for "calling any station." A standard transmission looks like this:

"CQ, CQ, CQ. This is W1AW, Whiskey One Alpha Whiskey, calling CQ and listening."


Step 3: Signal Reports (RST)

When another operator answers you, it is customary to exchange names, locations, and a signal report. We use the RST System to rate the connection:

Metric Scale Meaning
Readability (R) 1 to 5 How easy it is to understand the audio (5 is perfectly clear).
Strength (S) 1 to 9 How strong the signal registers on the radio meter (9 is exceptionally strong).
Tone (T) 1 to 9 Used only for Morse Code (CW) to rate the purity of the beep.


A perfect voice signal report is called a "59" (Five-Nine).


Step 4: The Art of Morse Code (CW)

While knowing Morse code (Continuous Wave or CW) is no longer a legal requirement to obtain an amateur radio license, it remains one of the most practical and respected skills in the hobby. Because it concentrates all your transmitter's energy into a very narrow bandwidth, CW can slice through heavy atmospheric noise and reach across the globe using exceptionally low power, succeeding even when voice signals are unreadable.

Writing and Timing
Morse code is written using dots (.) and dashes (-). The timing of these elements is critical to ensure the receiving operator can easily read your transmission:

  • A dash is exactly three times the duration of a dot.
  • The pause between elements of the same letter is one dot long.
  • The pause between completely separate letters is three dots long.
  • The pause between full words is seven dots long.

Airing the Code
To transmit CW on the air, operators use a physical switch called a telegraph key. A traditional "straight key" requires you to manually tap out the precise timing for every single dot and dash. Today, many operators use "iambic paddles," where pressing the left paddle creates a continuous string of dots and the right paddle creates dashes, with an electronic keyer handling the perfect timing.
