The Science of Unstable Nuclei
While radio waves are generated by accelerating electrons in an antenna, true radioactivity originates from deep within the atomic nucleus. Elements with overly massive or imbalanced nuclei are unstable. To achieve stability, they spontaneously emit energy and subatomic particles.

The Mathematics of Decay
Radioactive decay is a stochastic (random) process at the level of single atoms, but for a large collection of atoms, it follows a strict exponential decay law. The number of non-decayed nuclei $N(t)$ remaining after time $t$ is given by:
$$N(t) = N_0 e^{-\lambda t}$$
Where:
- $N_0$ is the initial quantity of the substance.
- $\lambda$ is the decay constant specific to the isotope.
- $e$ is the base of the natural logarithm.
A more common metric is the Half-Life ($t_{1/2}$), which is the time required for exactly half of the atomic nuclei in a sample to decay. The relationship between half-life and the decay constant is:
$$t_{1/2} = \frac{\ln(2)}{\lambda}$$
Notable Radioactive Elements
- Uranium (U-238): The most common isotope of uranium found in nature. It has a half-life of 4.46 billion years and is the primary fuel for nuclear reactors.

- Radium (Ra-226): Discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie, this highly radioactive metal glows pale blue in the dark and was historically (and dangerously) used in luminous watch dials.
- Carbon-14 (C-14): A radioactive isotope of carbon created in the upper atmosphere by cosmic rays. It is absorbed by all living things, allowing scientists to date ancient organic materials.
